CuteFTP

It's sooooooooooooo simple and convenient if your site has FTP access.

Step 1
Download CuteFTP from Globalscape.com
Install the program.
Start the program, if you have more than one site, don't use the wizard to connect to your site.

Step 2
This is the CuteFTP Wizard window - you won't need it, close it out if it pops up.

This is the main widow.  In the top left hand corner under the 'File' menu is a little icon that looks like a book - it is the 'Site Manager' and you can open it by clicking on the icon or from the 'File' menu.  You open it to add new sites to connect to.

Step 3
This is the 'Site Manager' where you can add as many FTP sites as you have.  The groups in the left hand panel might appear  differently.  Click on the General FTP Sites, then right click to add a group if you have more than one site to access - this way you can name it 'Personal Sites' or 'My Sites' to keep it separate from the other general ones.  Once you have created your group folder, chick on it to select it.  You can add your site (as many as you please) to your folder by either right clicking and selecting 'site' or by using the 'New' button in the bottom left hand corner.  Label for Site - something that identifies the site the connection is for - you might see in these images that I have several.  FTP Host Address you will enter the FTP address for your site - this address is provided by your host if you have FTP access.  For example:  Crosswinds would be ftp.crosswinds.net    OR Geocities would be ftp.geocities.com   OR  your domain would be ftp.yourdomain.com.  If you can't figure out what the ftp address is from your hosts' help pages or information they have supplied you, email them and ask them what it is.  FTP Site User Name is the name you log in with, supplied by your host when you get the site. FTP Site Password is the password you signed up with or the password they supplied you with.  FTP Site Connection Port is set to 21 already and this is the normal setting unless your host has supplied you with a different one to use.  I use this one on all sites. Login Type is preset to Normal and works on most sites - all of my sites use that one.  When you have filled those in, click on the 'Edit' button in the lower middle of the window.

Step 4
You probably will never need to use the 'Advanced' tab but the 'General' tab has special settings that can make life easier.  Occasionally you might not be able to remember your site password on the spot and the 'Site Comments' area is a good place for that information.  The important one here for you is the Default Local Directory;  This is the folder you have all of the files for this site saved in.  On my hard drive, I have a directory/folder names WebSites and in this folder I have subfolders for each website I maintain (quite a long one since I maintain over 17 websites of my own, friends, family and clients), but the main idea is that each site has it's own folder.  You can use the drop down to locate the proper folder for the site you are setting up now and when you connect to this site, the left panel of the main window will automatically open this folder in the left window pane.  The right window pain is for the Remote Directory.  If your site is being hosted by one of the popular hosts, they already have your path locked down and you won't need to use this.  If you have your own domain, you are probably set to your root folder instead of to the folder your general files are set in and you could use this setting to the folder that holds your general files but I don't bother with this one at all because once you are connected, using CuteFTP is just like using Windows Explorer on your own system. When finished here, click the 'OK' button to go back to the Site Manager, then the 'Connect' button at the bottom of the Site manager.

Step 5
If all settings are correct, you will connect to your site's folder in the Main window.

In the left pane, you should see the list of files and sub-folders for this site.  In the right pane, you will see the list of files/sub folders for your site or domain.  Above the right pane it will tell you what folder you are in.  As you can see in this image, I am in the root of the site folder because there is no path other than "/".  It lists all of the folders and files on that site.  As you can see in the left pane of this image, I am in my Buddies site folder on my hard drive as I had set for the default local folder for this site.  The file match in both panes as the files are already uploaded.

On a Crosswinds premium site and some hosting sites, you will be greeted with an instructional welcome window such as this:

You simply read the information and close the window to proceed.

Step 6

To a new site into a new hosting site which has a totally blank window on the right once connected, you simply highlight all files and sub-folders in the left pane and drag them to the appropriate folder in the right pane (remembering that if it is a DOMAIN, you need to access the correct folder for the files by double-clicking on that folder in the right pane first so it will open.) for most hosting of non-domain sites it is the folderl-ess pane that opens.

To access a sub-folder, for moving individual files or list of files, you double click on the sub-folder in the left pane and double-click on the folder in the right pane, allowing the sub-folder in the right pain to open before moving files.  Once the matching folders are opened in both panes you can drag one file or a list of files by selecting them just like you do in Windows explorer.  If you aren't accustomed to working in Windows Explorer, you should familiarize yourself with that first.

You can select a list of files in a row with by selecting the top file, pressing and holding the SHIFT key while you select the bottom file..
You can select multiple files not listed in a row using the ALT key while selecting each one.

Then you just drag them over to the right pane.

THIS IS A SIMPLIFIED TUTORIAL ON THE IMMEDIATE USE OF CuteFTP and not a complete tutorial.

You can expect pop-up boxes for overwriting files, as well as others during use.  Now, it is advisable to learn the other default settings by reading the manual which Globalscape has available on their site.
