Translucency Tutorial
for a frosted glass image

You  will need PSP6, Eye Candy and the angel in zip for this tutorial.  The only reason you need PSP6 for this tutorial is because it's a PSP6 psp image that PSP5 can't read.  If you'd like to email me for one that PSP5 will read, I'd be happy to make one.

First unzip the angel file and open it in PSP.   Using the SHIFT & D key, make a duplicate of the image then hit the 'Delete' key to remove the angel.

Now select the fill tool, set the foreground to white and clik on the blank image to give it a white background.

Use the 'Mask' menu and select 'New/From image'.

A window will pop up.  Make sure the 'Invert mask data' is checkmarked and then use the drop down box to select the unzipped angel image, then clik 'OK'.

You now have a fuzzy looking shape of the angel.

Next, from the 'File' menu, select 'New image' and set it large enough to have working room.  I used 400X400.

The new image is blank and 'selected', now clik on the mask image to set it to active

Clik on the 'Layers profile box;  then clik on the blued 'Layer1' and drag it to the new image.  As the cursor moves to over the new image, the cursor will turn into a small box with a '+' inside it.  When you see that, you can let go of the mouse button.

You will now see the angel mask in the new image.  From the 'Selections' menu, select 'From mask'.

Next, from the 'Mask menu' select 'Delete'.

A window will pop up asking if you would like to merge, select 'Yes'.

Next, from the 'Selection' menu, select 'Invert'.

Making sure the tool you are using is the  square selection tool, clik once on the angel in the image to set the selection to the non-blank pixels only.

The shape of the angel is now selected with 'marching ants (?)' in side the selection.

From the 'Image menu' find your Eye Candy plugin and select 'Cutout'.

Eye Candy opens - match the settings with the image below and then clik 'OK'.

From the 'Layers menu' you will see that 'Layer2' is check marked, clik on 'Layer1' and double check the menu to see that 'Layer1' is now check marked.

Select a medium color for the foreground,  I chose blue.  Clik on the fill tool and then clik on the angel.  The color will fill behind the angel causing her to show up brighter.  Next, if you wish, using the 'Images menu' select 'Noise/Add', choose the degree of noise you want, I chose '2', then clik 'OK'.

Now, you need to make 'Layer2' the active layer again, by using the 'Layers menu' and selecting 'Layer2'.  Doublecheck to make sure 'Layer2' is check marked.

From the 'Selection menu' choose 'Select all';  using the square selection tool.

Clik one time on the angel to close the selection in to only the white areas.

This is the point at which you add any color to the angel you want to, I like Blade Pro for this as I have an abundance of presets.  From the 'Image menu' find and start Blade Pro.

Here I am choosing my PinkPearl preset (available from 'Set 3' of the 'presets' section of this site, and then clik 'OK'.

You can Blade or not Blade as you choose but this it the point at which you find your Eye Candy and add the 'Perspective Shadow.

I used the setting in the image below.

You're angel has her shadow and is now done.  Shown in the image below in color,

and in the image below, white.

From this point, it's a matter of what you want to do with it.
I cropped close to the shadow, leaving just enough room above and below the angel for my name.
I used the 'Resize canvas' and set the width to 1020 pixels and set the height to what it already was.
I used the 'magic wand selection tool' to select the blank area of 'Layer1' and flooded it with the same blue color.
Still on 'Layer1', using the 'Images menu' select 'Noise/Add', choose the degree of noise you want, I chose '2', then clik 'OK'.
Then under the 'Layers menu'  I chose 'Merge', 'Merge all', added a dot of blue to her eyes and saved it.
