the Tug Mask Tutorial

Side border background made with two different Tug masks

Finished tug mask looks like this at 50%

Step 1
Open new image 400x400.

Step 2
Using the rectangle selection tool,  drag a rectangle selection, starting at coordinace 0,0 and draggin all the way down and approxiamtely 2/3 of the way across.  (Trust me, it doesn't have to be exact!)

Step 3
Flood fill selected area with white.

Step 4
Using the PSP Geometric/Twirl filter, set the degrees to anything you choose - it's not really important, or use my setting if you fell you'd rather;  I chose the setting -286 because that's where the slider stopped this time and I slid left since I slid right on the last one I made.  Very scientific approach, don't you think?  Negative causes the curve to be opposite of positive;  the smaller the number either dirextion, the slighter the curve.

Step 5
Okay, now we will do something freaky - we will increase the image dimensions (not 'resize') using the canvas sizing to width=2050 because we are going the resize to 50 percent and we want the final width to be 1025 and height=400 because when we resize, we want a 200 pixel height;  uncheck the horizontal centering because we want the white to the left side; check mark the vertical centering because it might as well be since it doesn't matter this time;  set Left to 0 so the side border doesn't end up in the middle of the image.

Step 6
Select all of white area - one way is to use Select All followed by clicking in the image somewhere to set the selection.

Step 7
Invert the selection

Step 8
Set flood color to black and  flood fill the selected area then clear the selection.

Step 9
Now we resize the image to 50%.

Step 10
Now we make our mask!
Masks/New/From Image

and source window set to this window;  source luminance checked, and Invert, unchecked.

Step 11
If the black seemed to disappear, you got it right,  now you save the mask for later use if you like it or you can start over and change the number in in Twirl filter.

Set the save path to your PSP mask folder and give the mask a name.

I called mine Tug 3 becaus eit's the third one I made and because I saw the Twirl silter as tugging at the straight line and . . . because I had to call it something!

Now you are finished making the mask, but since it's a real trick in using the mask is the drop shadow - I have added a second page which is to apply the mask and the drop shadow!

To continue . . .

If Finished, Close the Window.
