Easy, Elegant Animated Globes

Animated Koala Globe

This tutorial uses Paint Shop Pro 6 with the upgrade patch to v6.01, and tubes.

Here's the list of tubes you'll need to create the Koala Bear Globe:

1. Glass Globe from Fantasy Inspirations - grab the easy snow globe tutorial, too!
2. Sparkle Tube from Hood's - grab the rest of the terrific sparkles and flares.
3. My Koala Bear Tube
4. My Forest Green Base
5. My Floral Tube

If you don't know how to install tubes, go to Stacey's Tube Tutorial.

Step 1
Open a new 200 x 200 transparent blank image. Flood fill it with white or any color you want for your background. Then choose Image/Deformation/Circle.

Step 2
Select the magic wand Magic Wand Tool, and holding down the shift key, click on the background in each corner of the transparent background until the marching ants are all the way around the circle. Choose Selections/Invert to put the marching ants around the circle only.

Step 3
Select the Tube tool Tube Tool, find the Koala tube, leave it scaled at 100%, and apply it in the center of your circle. If you don't like the placement, select Edit/Undo or press Ctrl+Z and then apply again.

Step 4
Select the Glass tube. Click in the center of your circle. The glass will fill the circle without overlapping and no need to use the deformation tool to stretch and fit it! If you don't see the reflection, undo and move your cursor down and try again. You may need to do this a couple of times until you have the glass applied so the reflection spot doesn't detract from the bear.

Step 5
Select Image/Canvas Size and increase to 250 x 350. Use your mover tool to move your globe up, being sure to leave room at the top for topping with flowers.

Step 6
Add a new raster layer, select the globe base tube and then decrease the size down to 80%. Click at the bottom center of your globe.

Click on the deformation tool Deformation Tool. Move the base down until you see the edges of the globe (where it will "cup" around it). Using the handles on the right and the left, adjust the top to fit closely to the globe. Now grab the middle handle at the bottom and drag it upwards to change the height of the base. When you're satisfied with the height and the width, click on the tool control box, then click "apply."

If the base is off center, click on the deformation tool again or the move tool Move Tool and adjust it.

Step 7
Select Layers/Merge/Merge Visible. Add a new raster layer. Using the flower tube, scale it down to around 30% or less, and place the flowers where you think they look best. Then select Layers/Merge/Merge Visible again.

Step 8
If you want to sign your globe or add a watermark like I did, you can do so now (or even before adding the flowers). See my watermark tutorial for step-by-step instructions on creating your own unique watermark.

Step 9
There are two ways you can cut out the unwanted canvas. I prefer to use the second method as sometimes PSP literally crops off a few pixels at the top or side edges when using method #1, changing the rounding effect to an ugly flattened look.

Method #1: With the Magic Wand Tool magic wand, click on the background. With the ants marching, choose Selections/Invert so the ants are marching around the globe and base only. Choose Edit/Copy, then Edit/Paste As New Image.

Method #2: Take the selection tool - set it for rectangle. Then carefully draw a rectangle around your globe as closely as you can being careful not to touch any of the globe or base. Then select Image/Crop to Selection.

Step 10
Press Shift-D twice to make two copies. Line them up on your workspace. Save all three images (File/Save As) as koala1.psp, koala2.psp, and koala3.psp. Apply the sparkles. I used the same scaling in all three images, 30-35%, but in different places on each image. Be careful not to get any sparkles on the base, unless you want them there. Save each image again, only this time use File/Save.

Update May 14, 2000:  See my PSP Verus GIF89a showing why I now use GIF instead of PSP.

Step 11
Now let's animate it. Choose File/Run Animation Shop, then choose File/Animation Wizard. Use these settings for each screen:

Choose View/Animmation. If it's okay, then close the animation view, then choose File/Save As. Type in a name for your animation. I like to use preface my animation files with "ani-" so I named mine ani-koala.gif. The "Animation Quality Versus Output Size Window" will pop up. The slider bar allows you to change the levels which also determines the final size of your animation. I chose level 3 by sliding the bar down one notch.

Step 12
For a smaller globe like this, go back to PSP and resize each of the three images by 75%. Save each one again, then repeat Step 11. All done!
